Aroostook is Maine's northernmost county and is bordered to the
east, west and north by the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick
and Quebec.
Aroostook is often referred to as "The County," with almost empty
roads, (great for cruising) that dominate wide open spaces of farmland
that produce potatoes, broccoli, hay and small grain crops.
Wildlife is abundant in the Aroostook region with so much to see.
If you look close enough, you may see a moose munching on grass in
a nearby pond, a white tail deer springing off into the woods, or even
a bald eagle cresting a ridge with a fish hanging from its talons.
Aroostook offers endless recreational activities, with over 2,000 lakes, rivers and streams,
that cover nearly 80,000 acres. Experience cultural and sporting events as well as summer
festivals, all this and more, continue to draw riders to this region throughout the year. During
the spring and summer months, you can enjoy camping, fishing, canoeing or kayaking, (visit
maine.state-park.org for motorcycle-friendly camping). Let your motorcycle rest and take a
hike through acres of wooded paths, or bike along fields of potato blossoms.
Fall brings cool, crisp mornings and bright sunny days with an awesome display of fall
colors. A great way to see the foliage is to ride along one of the two-lane country roads, lined
on both sides with brilliant reds, yellows and orange. Travel various routes, through small
towns and over hills and see these colors come alive.
When winter arrives, your bike may be stored, but revisiting the Aroostook area this time
of year is well worth the beauty and serenity. The land is covered in a white blanket, walks
are peaceful and activities are abundant with snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating
and snowmobiling.
Be sure to include the Aroostook region to your next agenda, for a memorable vacation.
