On your next ride through Maine, make plans to take a trip up the
coast, to get to Down East, Maine... yep, up the coast to get down...
In the narrowest sense, Down East refers to the coast of Maine from
Penobscot Bay to the Canadian border.
Take a refreshing ride along the coast of Down East, Maine and
Acadia, feel the salty air, enjoy the scenery and smooth roads. Along
the way, take a break and taste some fresh Maine lobster, straight off
the boat. Lobster is well-known in this region, as well as lighthouses,
Acadia National Park, and the dramatic tides of Passamaquoddy
Bay. This area boasts some of the most scenic coastline in New
England, the region is dotted with quaint villages, history, natural
wonders, great shopping, and a wide range of restaurants, where
you can enjoy fresh off-the-boat lobster from local fishermen.
Coastal activities are endless in this region, including whale
and puffin boat excursions, sailing, sea kayaking, and sightseeing. The interior lakes offer
canoeing, fishing and camping, while local trails offer hiking and biking along the waters
edge. For something a little less strenuous, take a ride and do a little sightseeing at nearby
Quoddy Point Light, the easternmost lighthouse in the U.S., or ride over to Campobello in
Canada, where Franklin D. Roosevelt spent his summers. Although he visited less after
contracting polio, Campobello remained important to him. Today Roosevelt Campobello
International Park serves as a memorial to FDR and a symbol of cooperation between the
U.S. and Canada.
Whether you prefer the peaceful lapping of the waves along the shoreline, the activities
of small town festivals and fairs, or the thrill of seeing nature up close, you'll find that Down
East and Acadia offers that and more!
