The Western Lakes and Mountain Region of Maine is an extension of the majestic White Mountains into Maine. The area is known for its four season recreational activities, and boasts some of highest peaks in the Bigelow and Mahoosuc Mountain Ranges.

The westernmost region of the state has both the conveniences of city life and the pleasures of natural settings, and is known as the "Gemstone Breadbasket of North America," with endless mountain terrains and the scattering of clean, fresh lakes.

All manner of water sports are done on the region's hundred or so glacial lakes. It is home to the state's second largest lake; Sebago Lake. There is also Flagstaff Lake, and the Rangeley Lakes Chain, which encompasses over 110 lakes and ponds. Rangeley Lake State Park consists of 869 remote acres on the ten-square-mile lake, which is famous for landlocked salmon and trout fishing.

Other outdoor activities are first class here including Grafton Notch State Park, between Newry and Upton, where you can sightsee, picnic, and hike on 3,000 acres of beautiful natural terrain. Fishing, boating, camping, and hiking along the Appalachian Trail are highlights. You can also play a round of golf or enjoy the colors of the fall season. Winter months continue to boast a number of activities including cross country and alpine skiing, and snowmobiling.

The wildlife is amazing, seeing a moose, hearing the loons cry, or even a bald eagle soar, is just awesome. Be cautious, do not feed the them, and please be respectful, as you are entering their front yards.
